IMPHAL, February 7: Extending solidarity to the demand for justice to the killing of Sanjit and Rabina at BT Road on July 23, 2009, students from different communities gathered today at the Centenary Hall of Manipur University under the aegis of North East Forum for International Solidarity (NEFIS) to take out a candle light vigil up to the university main gate.
Speaking to news persons on the sideline of the rally, convenor of NEFIS Chinglen Khumukcham said that the candle light vigil was conducted to protest against the killing of Chungkham Sanjit and Rabina.
He informed that the candle light vigil was also held in Chandigarh, Gwalior and Kokrajhar in Assam and various places across the country simultaneously to register strong protest against the inhuman killing and demand justice to the case.
Chinglen pleaded with the international bodies including United Nations (UN) to intervene and investigate into the infamous case as the current State government is not trust worthy to deal with it.
The then Additional Superintendent of Police Imphal West Dr Ak Jhalajit now the SP Imphal West, who allegedly ordered to kill Sanjit should be suspended for his involvement in the killing and an inquiry should be initiated against him immediately. The government should provide appropriate compensation to the victim’s families, he demanded.
He said that the Chief Minister and government should be held responsible for the extra judicial killings committed in the State and probe should be ordered against them.
Chinglen on behalf of NEFIS said that the organization has pledged to continue its struggle and build a movement against the State government till extra judicial killings and fake encounters are stopped and culprits brought to trial.
The candle light vigil was taken part by around 250 students who also demanded end to the institutionalisation and legalisation of extra judicial killing and torture committed under the cover of Armed Forces Special Power Act (AFSPA) 1958 in the name of counter insurgency.
Mention may be made that Head Constable Thounaojam Herojit Singh, 33, son of Th Shyamsunder Singh of Lamdeng Awang Leikai revealed to select media persons, including Imphal Free Press, The Indian Express and CNN-IBN, for the first time his part in the staged encounter to kill Sanjit.and the circumstances under which he acted.
In his account at an undisclosed location, Herojit had alleged that the order to kill Sanjit was given to him by Akoijam Jhalajit Singh, the then Additional SP of Imphal West and presently the SP of Imphal West, at the spot of the crime itself.
The killer cop said that he was only following orders of a superior officer nothing else.

Following the confession, demands have been pouring in for suspension of the SP.
SP Jhalajit in a statement had denied the allegations levelled against him by the Head Constable.
He said that the case was investigated thoroughly by the premier investigation agency CBI and trial of the case is now going on in the Court of the Sessions Judge, Imphal West.
He said the matter being sub-judice he would not make further statement.
