Sarma was travelling from Mandalay to the Myanmarese town Tamu near the Indo-Myanmar border in connection with the business of his travelling agency, stated a delayed report here today. He was 78 and a bachelor.
Sarma, who was descendent of a Myanmar-based historically dispersed Manipuri family, was also known by his Myanmarese name U Htun Shwe and was a revered leader of the Myanmar-based historically dispersed Manipuri people. He was also a leading figure of the Myanmar Business Association.
He visited Assam twice.
The work group on the Historically Dispersed Assamese People will hold a condolence meeting at Ankurjyoti Club at Uzanbazar here on March 19 at 3pm, informed Dr Satyakam Phukan of the group.
