Guardian of descendents of Assamese people in Myanmar no more

GUWAHATI, March 17 – Kakchingtabam Sundar Gopal Sarma, a guardian of Mandalay, Myanmar-based descendents of the historically dispersed Assamese people, died in a road mishap when a truck collided with the car he was travelling in at Monya in Sangaing State of the neighbouring country on March 15.

Sarma was travelling from Mandalay to the Myanmarese town Tamu near the Indo-Myanmar border in connection with the business of his travelling agency, stated a delayed report here today. He was 78 and a bachelor.

Sarma, who was descendent of a Myanmar-based historically dispersed Manipuri family, was also known by his Myanmarese name U Htun Shwe and was a revered leader of the Myanmar-based historically dispersed Manipuri people. He was also a leading figure of the Myanmar Business Association.

He visited Assam twice.

The work group on the Historically Dispersed Assamese People will hold a condolence meeting at Ankurjyoti Club at Uzanbazar here on March 19 at 3pm, informed Dr Satyakam Phukan of the group.
