AMBA protests appointment of AG

IMPHAL, Apr 20 : Members of All Manipur Bar Association (AMBA) staged a sit-in-protest at Cheirap Court complex today against the proposed appointment of Advocate General of Manipur from outside the State.

Speaking to media persons, AMBA president H Chandrajit Sharma reminded that Advocate General is a Constitutional post and demanded the authority concerned to appoint the Advocate General from amongst the members of Bar Council of Manipur.

He appealed to the concerned authority to choose the Advocate General of Manipur who is professionally sound and have integrity in the profession.

He pointed out that under Manipur Judiciary Service Rule, 2005 judicial officers from Grade I to Grade III are made to fall under Gauhati High Court.

He also appealed to the concerned authority to amend the Rule Number 9 of Manipur Judiciary Service Rule, 2005 and appoint a competent lawyer from the State as the Advocate General of Manipur.

Meanwhile, High Court Bar Association (HCBAM) has temporarily suspended their modes of agitation against the proposed appointment of Advocate General of Manipur from outside the State.

Talking to media persons, HCBAM president Kh Binoykumar informed that a representative of the association led by senior advocate RK Nukulsana met Chief Minister N Biren yesterday during which the CM gave assurance to their submission and memorandum submitted with regard to the matter.

However, the CM denied to give any time bound for settling the issue, he said.
According to him, the CM expressed difficulties on taking a firm decision of his own as he had to consult with Cabinet Ministers and the Central Government regarding the issue.
Binoykumar appealed to the State Government not to take such contentious decision in future.

He clarified that the agitation was suspended temporarily as proceedings of the Court will be affected if they do not attend the Court.
