UNLF militants arrested in Guwahati

GUWAHATI, Aug 19: Eleven hardcore United National Liberation Front (UNLF) militants, including two women cadres, were apprehended by a combined team of the Assam Police and Central forces in Guwahati on Thursday.

The Assam police said the arrested cadres included a self styled lieutenant colonel, a self styled major and a self styled captain. The arrest was made in the wee hours of Thursday based on specific inputs.

A satellite phone, two Maruti Gypsy vehicles, five laptops and twenty mobile handsets were recovered from the militants.

The police said the militants were using the Assam capital as a base for carrying out organizational activities.

The militants have been identified as “lieutenant colonel” Khwaioaktam Jiten, “major” Maibam Sarat, “captain” Sinamboi Singh, Sandaijam Rakesh, Prem Singh, Mutum Ngamba, Tridip Nath, Oinam Naresh, W Sorem Singh, Liadhoni, and Hemgi Chano.

The militants have been subjected to intense interrogation by the police, according to the Assam police.
