Governor asserts culture and tradition identity of state

IMPHAL, April 30: The Governor of Manipur, Gurbachan Jagat called on the state and the people to leave no efforts in preserving and promoting the rich cultural heritage of the state which is renowned all over the world.

The governor stated this during the inaugural function of the 5 day festival of Dance Drama 2011 today at the Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy, Imphal organized by the academy.

Gurbachan Jagat inaugurated the festival as chief guest while, prof N Tombi Singh, vice chairman JNMDA presided over the function. Besides, well known artist, choreographer, directors, music composer of the JNMDA also took part in the inaugural ceremony.

Delivering his chief guest speech he noted that Manipur is famous for its rich arts and culture and colorful dances with each community in the state having its own distinct music and colourful dances.

He said that the state and its people are identified by these rich cultural traditions in other parts of the country and abroad.

He also added that it is a rare asset of the state and the people of the state should make all out efforts to preserved and promote it.

Acknowledging the relentless efforts of the academy in promoting Manipuri dance and music by exploring all possible avenues, the Governor said that the academy deserves appreciation and support from all. He wished that the present festival of dance-drama will inspire all people of the state with peace, love and elevation of human spirit.

He further asserted that dance and music which are an integral part of the culture and tradition of any civilization have developed through the ages and are part and parcel of human life, the main objective of which is thought to be the growth of spirit and the broadening of human consciousness.

The Governor terming the state as a multi ethnic society, where people belonging to different castes, creeds and religions have been living together from time immemorial, stressed the need to preserve and promote the age old and glorious tradition of Manipur and find expression in the works of art and culture.

A dance drama based on the folk tale of `Kabui Keioiba` directed by Guru RK. Priyogopasana was performed during the inaugural function.

Altogether 7 plays directed by renowned director and choreographers will be performed though out the festival. The other dance dramas to be showcased during the festival includes `Yogi Besh` by Th. Choatombi Singh, `Chingsong Khunu` and `Moirang Sha` by W. Lokendrajit, `Dreams of Women` by N. Tiken, `Guru Dakshina` by Th. Chourjeet and `Bidai Abhishap` by N. Amusana Devi. The Dance Dramas will be shown at 5 pm daily.

  1. Time to time Kangleipak is getting a reminder that culture and tradition are where we fallen and been used as a bait and manipulation by chicanery enemies to insinuate an insidious and ,malignant venom to sustain mechanism to sway people’s mind since our soil had desecrated.
