Thaisii underscores roles of church leaders in tackling HIV/AIDS issue

IMPHAL, July 25: Involvement church in combating the vexed issue of HIV/AIDS will open a whole new dimension in the state especially in the hill district, said Education Minister DD. Thaisii.

The minister stated this during the inaugural function of the 29th annual celebration programme of Trulock Theological Seminary cum Seminar on “The Church’s response to HIV/AIDs” jointly organized by the BTESSC and Tribal Research Institute government of Manipur, held at the Trulock Theological Seminary, Dewlahland.

DD. Thaisii who graced the inaugural function as the chief guest, further in speech expressed his optimism that the churches can bring a drastic change in the combat as it is a place where all the Christian community gathered for worship irrespective of their status.

He mentioned that Manipur today is facing many major problems of drugs especially among the youth and asserted that the Christian leaders should give their emphasis more on drawing the youths’ participation.

Speaking to media person on the sideline of the seminar, Peter Chiru, a senior lecturer of Trulock Theological Seminary said that such seminar will contribute a lot in changing the outlook of some ignorant people which has created a stigma and discrimination against people suffering from HIV/AIDS and other dreaded diseases.

Further during the seminar different resource persons also enlighten the gathering on the topics “facts, figures and problems of HIV/AIDS in North East India”, “The Tribal Research Institute role in combating/mainstreaming HIV/AIDS in tribal area of Manipur”, “The Church’s role in preventing HIV/AIDS amongst the youth in Manipur” etc.

Various church leaders and social activists were present at the workshop which deliberated on the role of church leaders in tackling the issue of HIV/AIDS.
