Armed militant nabbed with jammed firearm while intimidating woman

IMPHAL, Sept 18: An armed cadre of the KYKL (MDF) was nabbed by locals of Heikrak Mapal, Imphal East while unsuccessfully attempting to kill a woman on the night of September 16, even as his companion managed to flee.

The woman has been identified as Dayabati, mother of one Nepram Yaima, 38, s/o Amuchou of Hekrak Mapal, who is said to be the PRO of deputy speaker, Lokeshore.

According to reports, the incident occurred at the residence of Yaima, when two armed individuals identifying themselves as militants came asking for Yaima’s wife around 9pm on September 16.

However, when family members including Dayabati answered that she was not at home, one of the two without any further warning whipped out a pistol and tried to shoot at Dayabati. Fortunately, the elderly woman was saved as the pistol remained jammed.

Immediately the family alerted the neighbours and managed to nab one of the assailants while the other escaped from the spot. One 9mm pistol loaded with six live rounds was also recovered from him.

Later the militant cadre alongwith the recovered pistol were later handed over to the police concerned.

Meanwhile, police source has identified the apprehended individual as Phijam Khamba, 32, s/o Kokchao of Sekta Mayai Leikai. He is an active cadre of the KYKL MDF group and was involved in various anti-social activities.

One the other hand, armed miscreants attacked the house of a Pradhan of at Lairenjam Meijrao, Imphal West district, on the night of September 16.

Police sources said the incident occured around 10 pm. Armed miscreants indiscriminately fired at the residence of Pradhan Sougrakpam Manihar. However no human casualty has been reported due to the attack.

Police further informed that at least 15 bullet holes were found at the house.
