IMPHAL, November 28: The state government has initiated tight security measures in the state capital since the last few days keeping in view the high profile visit of the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi to the state capital proposed on December 3.
The state police department has identified vulnerable pockets in the Greater Imphal area and further intensified its security related activities by deploying additional state forces and conduction sudden mopping operations.
Meanwhile, as part of its security measures, a strong team of Imphal west district police under the supervision of SSP L Kailun, and led by ASP S Ibomcha conducted a surprise combing operation along the Paona Bazar and Governor road this evening.
The police team rounded up around 2000 youths between the ages of 18 to 35 for further verification. 12 of the youths who failed to produce proper identification were further detained and taken to the Imphal City PS for further verification.
On the other hand, according to a reliable source, chief secretary DS Poonia will chair a state high level official meeting at the conference hall of the Old Secretariat to review the progress of preparatory works in connection with the visit of the Prime Minister. The will be attended by the DGP Manipur and all principal secretaries, commissioners, secretaries, all head of departments concerned and directors of RIMS, JNIMS and fire service, DC Imphal west, DGM, BSNL, jt GM Airport Authority of India.
The source has also informed that another high level state official meeting was convened this afternoon chaired by planning, special secretary planning, government of Manipur Sajad Hassan and reviewed the progress reports of the components of the Capitol Project and City Convention Centre which will be inaugurated by the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi.
Another SPG team led by DIG SPG SS Chaturvedi and comprising of 37 personnel will arrive in the state capital tomorrow afternoon as part of the security measures for the high profile visit.
