Villagers nab KCP assailant

IMPHAL, April 14: Villagers of Awang Jiri Mamang Leikai under Nambol Police Station nabbed a suspected KCP cadre after he tried to shoot the husband of the Pradhan of Yarou Bamdiar Gram Panchayat, according to police.

The arrested youth has been identified as Chanambam Puranjoy alias Kulachandra, aged 25, son of late Kumar of Ngairangbam Makha Leikai.

Police recovered an Italian 7.65 mm pistol from his possession.

According to police, Puranjoy had come this morning at around 8 am in a Dio moped along with a woman at the residence of the Pradhan Leitanthem Sorojini Devi.

As Puranjoy asked for the Pradhan, a family member went inside and came out with the husband Leitanthem Binoy Singh. Without saying a word, the youth came up with a gun and tried to take a shot at Binoy Singh, but misfired.

After shouting that he was one with the party which came earlier, he fled. However, the villagers managed to caught hold of him, however he managed to escape again.

Puranjoy was arrested by Nambol police later on by a party led by the OC of the Nambol Police Station from Awang Jiri Mayai Leikai.

It may be recalled here that, L Binoy was shot by cadres of KCP-MC in an earlier incident. 

Meanwhile, according to the Newmai News Network, a village authority secretary was shot dead by unidentified gunmen in Chandel district on Friday.

According to the police, Mishang Angkha Maring, secretary of Meipouching village in Chandel district was shot dead by the gunmen when the victim was returning home. The incident occurred in the night of Thursday at a place called Chandolpokpi village under Chandel police station, said the police, Newmai News Network added.

Till the filing of this report, no organisation has claimed responsibility for act, whereas the Chandel police has registered a case in this regard, the news agency added.
