Rape accused apprehended

IMPHAL, June 9: The accused in the alleged rape case of a girl in a Mantripukhri restaurant was arrested from his locality this morning at 9:30am by a team of Imphal East police.

The CJM, Imphal later remanded him to four days of police custody.

The accused identified as Sounaujam Bocha, 27 son of (L) Iboton of Yumnam Khunou was also produced before media persons this evening at the office of the Imphal East SP.

The auto rikshaw which was used during the crime bearing regd no MN 06SA 0342 has also been seized by the police.

Speaking to media persons, SP, Angam Romanus Kamei said the accused has admitted his crime.

Meanwhile, the police have also picked up the proprietor of Taj Café, Mantripukhri where the alleged crime was committed.

The SP further clarified that the accused is not a 7th MR personnel as allegedly claimed by the accused to the girl.

Bocha is not related to the police or any security forces in any form, the police officer added.

The SP said that, according to his own disclosure, Bocha had contacted the girl on June 5 over the phone to meet him at Lamboi Khun Makha Leikai, village road and took her in an auto driven by him to Taj Café, Chumbrei Thong, Mantripukhri where the crime was committed and later dropped the girl at Khurai Oil pump.

Womenfolk of Salanthong area found the girl and informed the parents of the girl, the police officer said.

The family reported the matter to the Lamlai PS on June 8.

SP Angam said, such crimes are on the rise in the state due to the misuse of mobile phones.
