Watermelon festival concludes

IMPHAL, June 11: The Watermelon festival, 2012 organized by the Nahakpam Foundation for Development since June 8 concluded today at the Iboyaima Shumang Leela Shanglen.

The concluding function was attended by MP T Meinya, Assistant Professor, Economics Department, MU M Chinglen as chief guest and guest of honour, respectively.

The Lok Sabha MP lauded the effort of state farmers to cultivate watermelons in the state,

He however continued that the even though water melons are sold for Rs 20 per kg in the state; it is much cheaper in other parts of the country. He said Watermelon is sold at Rs 5 per kg in Delhi and other places.

Rainfall in the state has decreased tremendously in the last few years due to climate change; however the government is trying to promote a green revolution in the state.

Work culture is absent among the farmers of the state, he said.
