Cabinet likely to declare `drought` today

IMPHAL, July 19: The state cabinet is likely to declare “drought status” in the state at a meeting to be convened at the Chief Minister’s Bungalow tomorrow.

According to the officials of agriculture department, the director and other officials of the department today held a meeting at the office chamber of Commissioner Rajesh Agarwal. The officials tabled the reports from all nine districts at the meeting.

The officials are optimistic that the state cabinet will surely declare “drought status” and take up necessary action to mitigate the miseries of the state farmers.

It may be mentioned that the total annual rainfall is only 544.5 mm deficit of 313.2 mm from the normal rainfall. Most of the paddy fields in the state are without water and they could not bear the fruits due to insufficiency of rainfall.
