Drivers` union condemns state govt inaction

    IMPHAL, August 17: The All Manipur Road Transport Drivers’ & Motor Works’ Union has strongly condemned the state government for not considering the matter seriously when the drivers and their trucks are repeatedly attack by bandh supporters on the National Highways.

    A statement of the union has said that blocking National Highways and attacking drivers and trucks to fulfil their demands has become a common thing in the state. Trucks carrying LPG, essential commodities and Oil tankers escorted CRPF coming to Imphal yesterday were attack by the bandh supporter of the 48th hours bandh imposed by the Senapati District Village Chairmen/Secretaries Association protesting against the alleged deduction and diversion of 25 percent of MGNREGS funds from the village shares by ADC Members and line departments.

    The bandh supporters attack the trucks using stones, air gun, iron rod etc., causing damages to 34/35 trucks.

    The state government should provide compensation for the damage trucks and injured drivers, it said. It has further said that if the attacking of trucks and drivers along National Highway continues, the union will launch various forms of agitation and will stop service.
