Sharmila’s mother honoured with ‘Aphabi Mama’ award

IMPHAL, September 25: Hunger Striker Irom Sharmila’s mother Irom (O) Shakhi Leima was honoured with ‘Aphabi Mama-2012’ award at the 5th Kanglei Ningol Numit organized jointly by Kanglei Inat Yokhatpa Lup, Nambol and Ningol Khongchat Lup, Imphal at Nambol Community Hall today.

The function was attended by Heisnam Somorendro, chairperson, Nambol Municipal Council, Sanoujam (O) Ibemhal Leima and Ningthoujam Poireinganba Mangang, president, Kanglei Inat Yokhatpa Lup, Nambol as the chief guest and presidents respectively.

Speaking at the function Sharmila’s mother Shakhi Leima appealed the people to join hand in Sharmila’s struggle to repeal AFSPA from the state. She said that it is almost twelve years now that Sharmila is on hunger strike demanding to repeal AFSPA from the state.

Addressing the function as the chief guest, Heisnam Somorendro, expressed his concern at the attitude of the people in the state. He said that people are choosing to avoid the issues facing in the state instead of solving it together. He further said that these issues can only be solve when people start communicating and stand united against it. We need to start acting before it’s too late or else we will perish, he added.
