Journalist cremated with state honours

IMPHAL, December 26: Thangjam Dwijamani, correspondent of Prime news channel and a DDK news stringer who died in a police firing while on duty for a news coverage of the bandh on December 23 was given state honours led by the state Chief Minister and the Council of Ministers paying respects to his lifeless body before the last rites were performed today.

The state government agreed to a five point agreement of the memorandum submitted jointly by the JAC against the killing of Dwijamani and All Manipur Working Journalist`s Union.

The five point agreement includes the demand for necessary legal action to be taken up against the police personnel involved in the killing, to provide compensation to the bereaved family, to release all arrested bandh supporters and to provide for a memorial site for the late journalist.

The post mortem on (Late) Dwijamani`s body was conducted at RIMS morgue where friends and colleagues from media houses, family members and some members of the film fraternity in the state gathered.

After the post mortem, the dead body was carried in a silent procession from RIMS Morgue up to Manipur Press Club passing through important roads of the Imphal city.

More than 200 people participated in the silent procession that was taken through RIMS road, Nagamapal, Khoyathong, Kanglapat road upto Kangla Western gate from where the silent procession ended at the Manipur Press Club.

Rich floral tributes were given to the body of (Late) Th Dwijamani led by the State Chief Minister followed by his Council of Ministers, including the Deputy CM, various Ministers and MLAs.

Later, the body was taken to Dwijamani`s locality where a one minute silent observation was marked by all those present.

Following this, the body was further carried up to Cheiraoching place, where a site was provided by the state government for his memorial complex and then cremated.

It may be mentioned that late Dwijamani was killed in a police firing on 23 December.
