HCBA suspends agitation following CM`s appeal

IMPHAL, January 12: The High Court Bar Association, Manipur (HCBAM) has suspended its ongoing agitation on Saturday following an appeal from the Chief Minister.

According to a statement of the association, an executive meeting of the High Court Bar Association, Manipur was held on January 11 at the Office of the Bar under the chairmanship of N Kumarjit Singh, President, High Court Bar Association, Manipur.

“Today the Bar received an appeal from the Chief Minister through the Law Minister for calling off the ongoing agitation of the High Court Bar Association, Manipur in respect of the two demands of the people of Manipur.

The two demands being that no Judge from the Common Gauhati High Court can be absorbed in the High Court of Manipur except the two elevated from Manipur and to let the High Court of Manipur be installed as a High Court consisting of seven Judges for rendering effective administration of Justice,”   said the statement.

It added that the Chief Minister has informed that the representatives of the High Court Bar Association, Manipur report to Delhi on January 13 for a joint meeting with the Union Minister (Law & Justice) on January 14.

“In view of the favorable development and timely intervention of the Chief Minister as well as the Union Law Minister and the Union Home Minister, the High Court Bar Association, Manipur held an emergency meeting of the Executive Committee minutely deliberated upon the appeal of the Chief Minister, Manipur as well as the Union Ministers and unanimously expressed their views for immediate suspension of the ongoing agitation of the Bar,” it said.

“The members present minutely deliberated upon the favorable appeal of the Chief Minister, Manipur as well as the Union Ministers. All members present unanimously expressed their views for immediate suspension of the ongoing agitation of the Bar.”

“After due deliberations on the matter, the members present unanimously resolved, that the ongoing agitation of the High Court Bar Association, Manipur is suspended with immediate effect.”

It has further said that its resolution dated January 1, 2013 stating that the members of Bar shall cease to appear before the court of Justice SR Sen with immediate effect, was due to sheer and unfortunate misunderstanding and communication gap between the Bench and the Bar. Hence it is further resolved that the said resolution of the meeting stands modified and withdrawn and shall have no operation with immediate effect.

The meeting also resolved that the Secretary, High Court Bar Association, Manipur shall carry out the above resolutions of the Bar by communicating the same to the authorities concerned.
