Act of intimidation notified to Commission

IMPHAL, March 4: Nameirakpam Ongbi Seram Ningol Lembi Leima (55) a resident of Bashikhong Mamang Leikai under Irilbung Police station in Imphal East district submitted an application today to the Supreme Court Commission praying for stopping acts of intimidation of victim families and witnesses for co-oeperating with the Commission.

It may be mentioned that a Commission appointed by the Supreme Court began its hearing of six cases of alleged extrajudicial killings in Manipur at the panel’s makeshift office at  Hotel Classic in Imphal yesterday.

Lembi Leima who submitted the application, is the mother of Late Nameirakpam Nobo Meitei who was killed after being picked up from his house by Imphal East police and the Assam Riffles with the case being heard before the Commission as an alleged case of extra judicial killing. Nobo, 27 incidentally was killed along with his cousin Nameirakpam Govind Singh, 27.

Lembi in her prayer to the Commisson mentioned that her husband Nameirakpam Bashanta Meitei had filed an affidavit and deposed before the Commission yesterday. “Four Manipur Police Commando personnel entered our house and asked about the details of the family members,” her application said, adding that the team asked various questions about the two deceased being insurgents. Lembi maintained that the team which was led by an Inspector identified as John mentioned that he had given jobs to many people in the locality and hinted that he may offer a job to her second son Somorendro. Saying that this was was the first instance that Manipur Police Commandoes had visited her family, Lembi said she was worried that the police visit may something to do with her deposing before the Commissioned and appealed for ensuring that families and witnesses who are co-operating with the Commission are not intimidated and harassed by the police or security personnel.
