Awareness programme

IMPHAL, April 20: “Remedies to solve the problems of the state require good governance, good representatives and voters who understand whom to vote for to bring peace and harmony in the state”. This was said by Advocate Khaidem Mani while speaking at a one day awareness program on “Human Rights and Sustainable Development: Role of Civil Society Organization” held at the Centre for Human Rights and Duties Education at Manipur University. 

Speaking on the topic `Role of Public Participation in Bringing Communal Harmony` Khaidem Mani said the electoral system need to be changed to bring better governance and added that if the governance of the state improves then insurgency, fake encounters, fake surrenders and all the atrocities to the people of the state will be reduced.

He made the point that the current electoral system of majority winning has to be omitted and proportional electoral system implemented in its place. 

H Nandakumar Sarma, Vice-Chancellor, Manipur University in his address as the Chief Guest of the program said that the Human Rights Education in Manipur has been undertaken by the Centre for Human Rights and Duties at  MU for its students and said that the same course needs to be started far and wide in the state.

E Johnson, President of the International Peace and Social Advancement (IPSA) spoke on Juvenile Justice  and said it  the area of criminal law relevant to persons not old enough to be held responsible for criminal acts. He pointed out that magistrates and others have to be aware and sensitive  about child psychology if he/she has to handle juvenile cases.
