IMPHAL, June8: The Manipur Agricultural Produce Market Bill, 2010 which was passed by the Manipur Legislative Assembly should be implemented as an Act at the earliest considering the welfare of the farmers who are the mainstay of the state, said Joy Nongmaithem, president, All Manipur Progressive Farmers Association in a press conference at the association’s office today.

Speaking to media persons, he said that they have submitted a memorandum to the concern Minister on June 7, 2013 regarding the issue.

He further said that the farmers are facing a lot of difficulties in the present marketing system.

In the absence of any regulatory mechanism, the produce of the farmers get easily damaged, he lamented.

All other states of the North East region have already enacted and enforced the agricultural produce marketing laws, thereby creating an environment for the welfare of the farmers and their product which they produced, he said.

The government of Manipur has already discussed the Manipur Agricultural Produce Market Bill 2010 in the Manipur Legislative Assembly.

The Bill need to be turned into an Act at the earliest so that the products of the farmers could be sold off here in the state itself instead of selling it outside the state.
