IMPHAL, December 2: Winning the public’s confidence in the works of the police force will be amongst his top priorities as the Director General of Police, the new state DGP Shahid Ahmed has said today.
He said emphasis will be paid on working for the betterment of the general public in a bid to encourage the public to be friendly with the police.
Speaking to a select group of media persons at his new office today, the DGP announced that he will not spare anyone found guilty of crimes and involvement in various cases of drug smuggling which have been haunting the state, even if the persons happened to be from the state police force.
Harping on the reformation acts taken up by the previous DGP during his short tenure in office, the new DGP said he will continue on some of the reformation works taken up by his predecessor.
He said he had taken charge of the office yesterday, after his predecessor MK Das retired on November 30 and now he will continue with some of the reformation works like police patrolling during the night.
Announcing his first step as the new DGP of the state, he said that he had on his first day at office demanded the commandant of the 8th Manipur Rifles, Chandel to suspend the Jamadar who was arrested along with a huge consignment of drugs a few days earlier.
No police personnel found guilty of misconduct will be spared, the DGP pronounced.
Necessary actions will be taken up against any police personnel found involved in any crime, he reiterated.
He also declared that in order to achieve a good state police force, the police personnel need to be more professional in their duties; and ensure speedy investigation process in all cases including those related to insurgency, he added.
Another issue of utmost priority is the prevention of crimes against the weaker sections of the society, he continued.
He further observed the need for co-operation between the police and the civil organizations and said the police will try to co-ordinate with various NGOs from the grass-root level to strengthen the fight against crimes in the state.
To check and control transportation of illegal items including drugs along the various routes in the state, intensive frisking and checking will be introduced along various stretches of the routes, he asserted.
There will be no laxity while handling drug-related cases and anyone found transporting illegal drugs either in small quantities or large scale will not be spared, he said.
