MLA Lukhoi raises custodial death issue

IMPHAL, February 27: The incident of an alleged custodial death of Thoudam Digbijoy on February 25 at Wangoi police Station was raised by MLA of Wangoi, Oinam Lukhoi in the Assembly session today during zero hour.

Lukhoi further said that the person was arrested regarding an elopement case on February 23 around 2.30 pm by a team of Wangoi Police station.

His family was informed of his death by the said police at around 8 am on February 26, 2014 as a case of suicide as he was found hanging from the door of the toilet at the police station lock up, the MLA said.

He continued that the death is of a suspicious nature.

Recently, he had accompanied state Home minister Gaikhangam during an inspection tour of several police stations including the said police station where the Digbijoy was found death.

The MLA continued that during the visit, he had observed that there was no utility items for an inmate to use to hang himself to death.

Lukhoi mentioned further that the incident is raised at the Assembly floor as the public of the area has mobbed the police station yesterday.

He had pacified the mob while assuring that the matter will be tabled at the Assembly. He further urged the concerned authority to investigate the cause of death and conclude specifically on whether the case is one of suicide or one resulting due to police torture.
