Ukhrul road construction bluff detected

By R Lester Makang

UKHRUL, March 11: Even as the completion report of the link road construction under PMGSY from NH-150 to Khangkhui Khunou via Choithar in Veikhang area of Ukhrul district is found posted on the official website of the Ministry of Rural Development, Govt. of India, members of the Tangkhul Naga Contractors Long (TNCL) got a terrible shock on Tuesday when they came upon the said road without any signs of work execution required for its completion.

A team of TNCL was on a visit to the construction site today at the invitation of the Veikhang Development Front (VDF) when they came upon the dismal progress of the work much contrary to the report available on the website.

Later in the evening, VDF organized a press conference at Phungreitang regarding the matter and registered their strong opposition to the diversion of road construction to a new alignment while leaving the previous alignment incomplete.

Significantly, VDF is demanding resumption of the road construction as per the previous alignment already undertaken under the erstwhile BMS which has been suspended following interruptions by certain vested interests.

Addressing the media persons here, VDF chairman, A Hongva said that the previous alignment was taken up under BMS in 1986-87 with the collective consent of the people of Veikhang area as it is topographically feasible to connect the contiguous villages of Khangkhui Khunou, Khangkhui Khullen, Nungshong Khunou and Nungshong Khullen.

However, some unscrupulous elements brought it under PMGSY and shifted the work to a new alignment which is not only against the wish of the people of Veikhang area but also deprives road connectivity.
