IMPHAL, December 18: The Zeliangrong Baudi, Assam, Manipur and Nagaland (ZB, AMN) while sharing the grief of the bereaved families, vehemently deplored the incident of two brothers drowning to death over a dispute of chieftainship of Gahtao Village under Tamenglong District.

According to a release, it said the ordeal in traditional water emersion judgement (Dui Kei-Maidenghmei) on the dispute over the proof of share on the land and the chieftainship of Gahtao (Satu) Village of Khoupum Sub-Division of the said district on December 12 is unfortunate.

It said that a series of case hearing had been carried out in the office of Deputy Commissioner of the district on the said dispute, but failed to deliver justice.

Finally, traditional method of justice was adopted leading to the death of Singlanglung Gangmei, son of late Khoiruilung Gangmei and Kalanjin Gangmei alias Kadeikhao Gangmei, son of late Gaimakulungpou, it added.

It charged that the Tamenglong District authorities including the Sub-Divisional Magistrates with police man-power including many village authorities of the Khoupum areas sanctioned the outdated system of trial for justice.

This is very unbecoming on the part of the modern day judiciary system, it said.

The ancient way of judgment was necessitated for the want of legal awareness but the present generation cannot imagine adopting such a device, added the release.
