240 loaded oil tankers escorted into Imphal

IMPHAL, June 29: Altogether 240 loaded oil tankers reached Imphal today before noon escorted by a large security contingent.

Earlier the security arrangement was for a Nagaland based CRPF team to escort the oil tankers from Khatkhati to Khuzuma in Nagaland, from where it will again escort back the empty trucks from Imphal.

However, under a special arrangement which will be continued during the indefinite economic blockade called by the Maun Tombing group of the All Tribal Students`™ Union, Manipur, the CRPF team from Nagaland escorted the tankers upto Imphal.

It is also learnt that the CRPF team which escorted the tankers till Imphal today will escort back around 70 tankers, whereas another CRPF team will be escorting 60 loaded oil tankers into the State from Khatkhati tomorrow.

In the meantime, it is also learnt that in an unprecedented conduct, officials of the Assam Motor Vehicle department have started weighing oil tankers bound for Manipur on the Weight Bridge since yesterday.

According to the All Manipur petroleum Tankers`™ Drivers`™ Union and the All Manipur Petroleum Transporters`™ Association, oil tankers have no place for extra baggage and they load fuel according to the challans issued by the different supply points in Assam.

They continued this exercise has become a hindrance to the movement of the tankers.
