JAC warns of stronger demonstrations if Pong Lambi not re-opened soon

IMPHAL, December 17: The JAC formed against the closure of the Pond Lambi by the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences authority staged a sit in protest in front of the JNIMS wall blocking the road today and later took out a protest rally.

The JAC was also supported by locals who participated in the demonstration.

Speaking to media persons during the demonstration JAC convenor Leikhram Tombi said three MLAs including Khurai MLA Dr Ng Bijoy Singh, Lamlai MLA Ksh Biren Singh and Kshetrigao MLA Amin Shah had earlier assured to open up the road block once construction of the JNIMS is completed, however, the wait has been prolonged too much.

The rally was however stopped by police personnel including women personnel midway.

If the demand for reopening of the road is not met with sooner, we will continue with stronger agitations, and the MLAs, JNIMS authority and the Chief Minister should bear full responsibility for any untoward incident arising out of the agitation, he warned.

JAC member Irom (o) Reena reiterating their JAC demanded re-opening of the Pong Lambi, and added the locals have made numerous appeals on meet the demand, but in vain as the authorities have continued to remain silent.

Elaborating on the grievances due to the closure of the road, she said people of the area have to go around the hospital by taking the Porompat Road and then the Ayangpalli Road to enter JNIMS for a medical check-up though they live next to the JNIMS wall.

She further appealed to the authorities concern to meet the demand at the earliest in order to avoid any untoward incident during their agitations.

The demonstrators also held placards demanding re-opening of the road.
