IMPHAL Jan 28: All Manipur Nupi Marup president Th Sakhi Devi has been elected as the national vice president of National Federation of Indian Women (NFIW) at the recently concluded 20th meeting of NFIW held at Vishakapatnam from January 20 to 23.
According to the newly elected national vice president of the NFIW, the meeting was inaugurated with a public rally and a public meeting participated by thousands of women.
Speaking to media persons at the Manipur Press Club today, she said the NFIW meeting was also participated by 16 women from six other countries.
She said solidarity messages from 32 countries were also read out on the occasion. Vini Burrow, president of Women International Democratic Federation, USA also attended the meeting, she said.
Manipur was represented by a 19-member team in the meeting which was attended by representatives of 23 States of the country.
Various issues concerning women were discussed on the occasion including the issue of 33 percent reservation, she added.
Several commissions were formed during the meeting namely, communalism/religious fundamentalism commission; Land reform and women land rights commission; Right to Education and role of NFIW commission; women employment commission, training and labour reforms commission and Gender and politics of class violence commission, she said.
Several resolutions were adopted related to communalism, dowry, crimes against women and regarding the special case of AFSPA in NE/ Manipur during the meeting, she added.
We proposed removal of AFSPA which was supported across community including even the international participants, she added.
She said the State delegate also proposed demand for Highway Protection Force for NH 2 and NH 37.
Aruna Roy and Anne Raja were both re-elected as the president and general secretary respectively.
Four members from Manipur namely Th Sakhi Devi, L Sumatibala, Th Sarojini and Th Ebetombi were inducted in the 131 National Council Members of NFIW. Th Sakhi Devi was also elected as the national vice president, added another member of All Manipur Nupi Marup.
