Girl in child abuse video rescued, accused at large, say police

IMPHAL, February 6: Police have rescued the child who was seen tortured by an unidentified woman, a video of which was uploaded on the social media. The woman, however, is said to be still at large.

According to a PRO Police statement, based on a video clipping showing an unknown woman torturing a small girl child uploaded on social media in the 3rd week of January and subsequent report from the Child Welfare Committee, Imphal East, a combined team of the Cyber Crime Unit, Imphal West and lady police officers from Imphal Police Station had started investigation into the report.

On investigation, it was found that, the crime took place at the rented house of one Toijam Don, 32, son of (L) Achou Toijamba of Thangapat Mapal Konung Leikai near Harikhagok Makhong, it said.

It continued the woman has been identified as Toijam (o) Ningthoujam (n) Memcha Devi, 55, wife of T Lokeshwor alias Ibochouba alias Kiyamba alias Abo of Nambol Kongkham Mayai Leikai.

Further investigation revealed that Memcha Devi has two sons but no girl child and she had requested one of her sisters-in-law to arrange a girl child for adoption, it said.

Accordingly, her sister-in-law arranged a girl child aged about 2 years for adoption by Memcha, it said.

The child has been under adoption for about four years now and during this period, the child was subjected to severe cruelty by Memcha which left injury marks on her forehead, lips, head and even bite marks on her belly, the police statement said.

The victim child was rescued and handed over to the Child Welfare Committee, however, the accused Memcha is still at large, it said.

A case has been registered at Women Police Station, Imphal West and investigation is going on, it said.
