IMPHAL, February 1: In continuation of its agitation on various issues, enraged volunteers of the students’ union of Government Polytechnic, Takyel today resorted to damaging properties of the institution which included some books from the library.

It may be recalled that the agitation was launched on January 30, demanding latest infrastructure and equipment in the institution. Meanwhile during the protest, the students tried to take out a rally, which was however foiled by the police personnel who were present in large number at the entrance gate of the campus. A brief tussle broke out between the police and the students.

Later the principal of the institute, Kh Rajchandra arrived at the spot and informed that he had met with the Minister of Higher and Technical Education, Moirangthem Okendro. Rajchandra told the students that the minister has given assurance that he will personally come to the campus tomorrow 11:30 morning to hear out the grievances.

The agitated students calmed down and agreed to wait for the minister to arrive, however they maintained that they will take out a rally to the minister’s office in case he fails to turn up tomorrow. At the same time the class boycott and boycott of the Principal of the institution will continue till their demands are met, they asserted.

General Secretary of Government Polytechnic Students’ Union, Asem Prem Meitei said that they have been compelled to take out the agitation against the authority concerned as their grievances have fallen on deaf ears in spite of repeated delegations made earlier in the past. He continued that their demands must be met at the earliest to bring normalcy in the campus.
