IMPHAL, March 4: Aimol Tribe Union Manipur president RT Akhul Aimol today lamented the forceful conversion of some Aimol into the Naga-fold.

He said this forceful conversion will only result in the downfall of the Aimol tribe.

The remaining population of the tribe will never join the Naga fold, he declared during a press conference held at the Manipur Press Club today.

He said the previous executive members of the Aimol Tribe Union, Manipur led by S Munthoireng and his colleagues who had joined the Naga fold has been dissolved. He further appealed to the media houses against entertaining the ATUM’s statements.

The Aimol community shares a historical background with the chin-kuki-mizo tribes and are different from the Naga tribe, he said.

There are only 15 Aimol villages in the entire State including the four in Chandel district, he observed.

He further questioned where the 20 Sector Assam Rifles and 26 Sector Assam Rifles were when Nagas were loitering in Aimol villages in the district forcing the villagers to admit their entry into the Naga fold.

He said a memorandum has also been submitted to the State Home minister and other concerned authorities for the safety of the Aimols, which the Home minister is yet to respond to.
