Memicha JAC demands arrest of culprits

IMPHAL, March 2: The JAC formed in connection with the alleged killing of Yumnam (n) Nongmaithem (o) Memicha Devi, 46 today tried to storm the Assembly complex while the Assembly was in session.

Memicha’s body was found around 10:30am of February 26 from Samaram Panthak Loukol in Thoubal district.

A large number of members and supporters of the JAC tried to storm the Assembly which was in session around 2pm, but was stopped by the police in front of the tribal Research Institute, Chingmeirong.

Meanwhile, the protestors shouted slogans asserting that Memicha’s death is not a case of suicide and that she was killed by someone and further demanded that the culprits should be arrested and punished according to the law.

Meanwhile, in a memorandum submitted to the Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister and opposition MLAs, the JAC has warned to launch general strikes and blockades, if the culprits are not arrested within seven days.

Other demands raised by the JAC also include a Rs 5 lakh compensation for the grieving family which should be provided within a month and a regular government job for one of the deceased’s daughters.

It may be mentioned that Memicha who is from Naharup Pangong Makhong was married to N Shyam Singh of Samaram Mamang Laibung Leikai.
