Two days after release, Sharmila rearrested

IMPHAL, March 2: In what has become an annual ritual, Irom Chanu Sharmila was today rearrested by the police on charges of fasting onto death.

The anti-Armed Forces Special Powers Act crusader was arrested around 11 am from Shahid Minar at BT Road by a team of City Police acompanied by another team of the Imphal West District Police led by two high ranking officers. The police teams were also accompanied by a medical team of the JNIMS who have been looking after Sharmila.

Following the arrest, the police registered an FIR against her under Indian Penal Code Section 309.

In connection with the case, the police attempted to produce her before the Chief Judicial Magistrate/ Imphal West; however, as the CJM was on leave, she had to be produced before the court of Judicial Magistrate 1st Class/ Imphal West I Alex Muivah at Lamphel.

She was remanded to judicial custody by the court following which she was placed inside the security ward of JNIMS.
