IMC polls: Surge in tempo of filing nomination papers

IMPHAL, May 16: Altogether 175 nomination papers for councillors and ward development committee members for the upcoming IMC elections were submitted to their respective returning officers in Imphal East and Imphal West districts today.

As per official information, 17 candidates from Congress, 19 from BJP, 18 independents, two CPI and one JD(U) have filed their nomination papers for councillor elections in Imphal West district.

In Imphal East only 20 aspirants have filed papers for councillor elections and 28 for WDC members.

The party-wise break of candidates for councillors is Congress 7, BJP 6, CPI one and rest independents.

For the upcoming IMC election, Congress had announced the names of candidates in 25 wards while their main rival BJP have released the names of 26 candidates.

The Left and Democratic Alliance has already declared that they will be fielding around 15 candidates.

Meanwhile, after a prolonged debate, BJP has allocated the IMC ward-3 seat to Newtonchandra. N Nimbus, state secretary, said the ticket committee of BJP was facing some problems over selection of party candidates for ward number 3 and 20.

But on last Saturday Bijen was allotted ticket from ward number 20 of Yaishkul Assembly Constituency but for ward number 3, the committee members decided to vote for a final decision.

On the same day the vote come out a tie with two ticket competitors getting 5 voters each.

Afterwards, the committee reserved the result and handed the final decision to state Present K Bhabananda Singh.
