IMPHAL, April 18: The Khongjom Battle Memorial Celebration Committee has appealed to all concerned to attend the 125th Khongjom Battle Memorial Celebration which will be observed on April 25 at Khongjom Tengol Lampak, Khongjom.
Speaking at a press conference held today at the Manipur Press Club, celebration committee secretary Chingtam Luwang said the Khongjom battle actually took place on April 25, 1891 as is clearly mentioned in the London Gazette.
He said the Khongjom Day has been observed on April 25 since 1994 in reference to a thesis compiled by MK Priyobarta Singh, the first Chief Minister of Manipur.
He said the committee will submit a memorandum to the President during his visit to the State to attend the State organised Khongjom Day observation on April 23 against the wrong commemoration of the Khongjom Day by State government.
The State government has been observing the day on April 23 since 1982 based on a thesis written by the then Dy CM Dr L Chandramani Singh, he said.
He added that the committee will also submit an interest to participate in a survey work to be conducted by the Geological Survey of India to dig up the true date of Khongjom Battle of 1891.
He further appealed to all the concerned including the CSOs, student organisations, women organisaitons and local clubs to attend the observation on April 25 at Khongjom Tengol Ground.
