IMPHAL, March 28: The general strike called by the All Manipur VDF Welfare Association today went off peacefully and had little or no impact on normal life in the State.
The strike was called by the association in pursuit of their demands related to their allegedly poor service conditions and pitiable monthly remunerations.
At some places on the Tiddim Road, strike volunteers did try to put up road blocks, but police dispersed them before they could seriously affect traffic flow
In Bishnupur district, strike supporters who came out on the roads began pelted stones at passing vehicles, and two vehicles are reported to have suffered minor damages, but police came out to disperse the strike volunteers and take control of the situation.
In the valley districts, strike supporters were able to sporadically impose road blocks, but not for long as police arrived to put an end to their activities.
In the hill district, the strike had no effect whatsoever.
Interstate as well as inter-district passenger services continued normally, and markets every remained open as every day.
Educational institutes and government offices remained open and functioned normally. Even petrol pumps and business establishments remained open.
However, in the afternoon at about 5.30 pm, representatives of the association and their adviser met with the Director General of Police, DGP, Shahid Ahmed, IPS, at his office at the Police Headquarters, and had a discussion about their demands.
The association members said they would be having a meeting amongst themselves, and then decide on their future course of action.
