AJWJU denounces assault on journalists

IMPHAL, Jan 13: Strongly condemning the brutal assault on four journalists by a youth at Keishamthong in Imphal West on January 11 around 9.30, All Jiribam Working Journalists Union (AJWJU) has demanded befitting punishment against the assaulter according to the law.

In a press note, AJWJU said the four journalists namely senior reporter of Sangai Express Athokpam Jiten who is also the Publicity Secretary of AMWJU; senior reporter of The People’s Chronicle Sukham Nanda who is also the Standing Committee Member of AMWJU; senior reporter of Poknapham RK Bulluraj and care taker of Manipur Press Club L Jashubanta were attacked by the youth identified as Meisnam Dujon Singh, 30 son of M Kullachandra of Keishamthong Top Leirak.

The four journalists after performing their normal duty were having pan at a shop when the youth using a bamboo stick started beating them black and blue, it claimed.

Further demanding stringent action against those police personnel who remained mute while the journalists were assaulted nearby them, the union appealed to the government to extend all possible help to the injured journalists.

Assault on working journalists which has become common in the State is most unfortunate, AJWJU said.

The journalists union pledged to continue endorsing every step taken up by All Manipur Working Journalists Union (AMWJU) and Editor’s Guild Manipur (EGM).
