Local club urges investigation into extortion allegations during pre-paid meter installation

IMPHAL, January 10: The Kairang Mamang Leikai Young Union Club submitted a memorandum to the State government to investigate allegations against ‘rampant corruption and large scale extortion’ while installing pre-paid meter box for power consumers at kairang Mamang Leikai.

According to the memorandum signed by its president N Dhanabir Singh which has been made available to media persons, officials of the MSPDC under a certain officer has been committing rampant corruption and extortion from the consumers while installing pre-paid meter box.

It said the club has received several allegations against the officials in this connection.

It further charged that an officer and his staff had brought the pre-paid meter box sometime in the first week of September 2015 and that the official and his staff has collected amounts ranging from Rs 200 to Rs 1000 as pre-paid recharge amount during the time of installation.

It further charged that the installations had been faulty even leading to a fire at one house.

The memorandum also charged the official and his team of conducting drives and collecting money from some consumers after threatening them of police action.
