Man arrested for assaulting journos remanded to police custody

IMPHAL, January 12: A 30-year-old arrested on charges of brutally assaulting three State journalists and the caretaker of the Manipur Press Club on January 11 night was today produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate Imphal West and remanded to police custody till January 15.

The accused has been identified as Maisnam Dujon Singh, 30, son of M Kullachandra of Kesihamthong Top Leirak.

Dujon had allegedly assaulted senior reporter Sangai Express Athokpam Jiten, Sukham Nanda of The Peoples’ Chronicle, RK Bulluraj of Poknapham and MPC caretaker L Jashubanta yesterday around 9:30pm at Keishamthong area.

The All Manipur Working Journalists Union president W Shamjai had submitted a written complaint to the Imphal Police Station around 10:15pm yesterday.

In his complaint, the AMWJU president said around 9.30 pm of Monday, four members of the union who were returning from their respective media houses had stopped at a pan shop at Keishamthong area. They were approached by the Dujon who was unknown to them, the complaint said and further added that without any confrontation, Dujon attacked two of the union members using a bamboo stalk, when the other two tried to intervene they were also attacked.

The attack left Jiten seriously injured and is presently undergoing treatment at the JNIMS. The other three were discharged after treatment last night.

The accused was also arrested last night from his residence by a team of the Imphal Police Station and was produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate Imphal West court Chirap complex today under FIR number 9(1) 2016 Imphal police Station under section 326 of IPC “causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons”

During the court proceeding, the IO of the case appealed before the court for a four day police custody of the accused for further investigation following which he was remanded to police custody till January 15.
