Kisan Mela on Oak Tasar held

IMPHAL, February 10: A one-day “Kisan Mela on Oak Tasar” was held at Regional Tasar Research Station, Imphal on Wednesday. The fair was organized by Central Silk Board, Ministry of Textiles, government of India.

Sericulture/ Veterinary and Animal Husbandry, government of Manipur principal secretary Lungmuana Lakher attended the function as chief guest, Sericulture/ Commerce and Industries director B John Tlangtinkhuma as guest of honour and Central Tasar Research & Training Institute, Central Silk Board, Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, Ranchi Dr Alok Sahay attended as the president.

Speaking at the inaugural session, Lungmuana conveyed that welfare of the Tasar Silk producers is the top priority of the Tasar Silk Development Boards of both the State and Central governments so as to sustain the ancient trade. He lauded that sericulture activities in Manipur and its products are not only unique but highly acclaimed all over the world.

The principal secretary also called upon the people to protect oak tasar and mulberry grooves to ensure sufficient raw materials.

Dr Alok Sahay said the North East is suitable for plantation of oak tasar.

The Tasar Research Station Centre’s has been established in Manipur and Nagaland, he said.

He also highlighted many welfare schemes taken up by both the State and Central governments for the oak tasar growers.

Oak Tasar grower, Mark of Tushar Village in Ukhrul district was presented with the best cocoon producer, Theimi of Tushar village in Ukhrul district bagged second and Ashang of Soraland village in Senapati district bagged third respectively during the fair.

Altogether 18 stalls of silk garments were opened during the fair.
