“Nonging, Manipur goose quill are on the way to extinction”

IMPHAL, March 3: The Manipur goose quill, jungle fowl, green peafowl, State bird nongin, hornbill and some pigeon varieties found in the State have become endangered species and steps should be taken up at the earliest to save these species from total extinction, Principal Chief Conservator Forest P N Prasad observed on the occasion of World Wildlife Day today.

UNESCO is under process to adopt Keibul Lamjao home of the State Animal Sangai as a World Heritage Site, he said adding that UNESCO might adopt Keibul Lamjao as a national park by the year 2017-18

Speaking to media persons at his office chamber at Forest Head Office, Sanjenthong, the Principal Chief Conservator of Forest said on December 20, 2013, during its 68th session, The United Nations General Assembly had marked March 3, the day of adoption of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, as the World Wildlife Day proposed by Thailand to celebrate and raise awareness of the world’s wild fauna and flora.

Ever since then, starting from 2014, the day is observed worldwide, he said adding that today is the third observation of the day.

Since the adoption from 2014 World Wildlife Day is observed every year worldwide, PN Prasad asserted that today is the third observation of World Wildlife Day all over the world. Every year it is observed with a separate theme and this year it is observed under the theme ‘Future of Wild life is in your hands.’

He further expressed that this year’s observation is giving emphasis to protection and conservation of elephants.
