Price tags on govt jobs unfortunate: W Shamjai

IMPHAL, March 3: All Manipur Working Journalists Union president Wangkhemcha Shamjai today observed that people seeking government jobs including the post of teachers and others have to spend at least Rs 15 to 25 lakhs to get a government job.

He said there is corruption in all recruitment process in the State.

Shamjai was speaking as a presidium member during the 23rd Foundation Day observation of the All Manipur Students Guardians’ Organisation Manipur held today at Singjamei Sougrakpam Leikai.

Today the government schools in both the hills and the valley are in deplorable conditions, he said.

He continued we have witnessed student bodies submitting memorandums after memorandums accompanied by photographs to the government about the sorry condition of the government schools, but, the authorities concerned are yet to respond.

Shamjai charged the government machineries of being corrupt, and said in order to make the State corruption free, the political leaders need to initiate the steps followed by the others.

Rather than promote government schools, the authorities are more concerned with demolishing them, he said, before adding that corruption or back door recruitment of teachers have only supplemented in the downfall of the society.

At the same time, private schools are springing up like mushrooms everywhere, he said.

But the concern is most of these schools are run like business houses and industries, he lamented.

The AMWJU president said that there are three forms of schoolings which are home, institutional and society, he said elaborating further that children begin their learning process from their parents at home.

He added a corrupt educational institution where the teachers are corrupted, reflects on the students studying there.

An educational institution plays an important role in building the young minds, he observed.

The media as the fourth pillar of a democracy contributes largely in bringing betterment of the society, he said. The editorials of the newspapers reflect on the views of the paper and is the backbone of the particular media house, he added.

Media persons while discharging their duty of disseminating information to the public faces several hurdles, he said.

The AMWJU president also called upon the media persons for investigative journalism in the education sector to improve it.

The foundation day celebration was also attended by social worker H Vikramjit Singh, president AMPSWA Ph Landhoni Devi, educational activist N Monaoton Singh, AMSGO president Rev Y Renghang Chothe and wife of PHE minister Irengbam (O) Bojarani Devi as presidium members.
