Singjamei youth found dead under suspicious circumstances; protest disrupts NH-2 traffic

IMPHAL, April 26: The death of a 22 year old boy from Singjamei, who was found hanging with blindfolded eyes at Lilong today, sparked an uproar in his locality resulting in a blockade of the National Highway 102 along the Singjamei stretch disrupting normal traffic.

The deceased has been identified as Sagolsem Prasanta alias Abung, son of S Roshan Singh of Singjamei Makha Noarem Leikai Beni Leirak under Singjamei police station.

According to reports, he was found hanging from a tree, with a blindfold covering his eyes, at Lilong Haoreibi Awang Leikai near Junior High School river bank by pedestrians early morning today.

The deceased’s pair of slippers was found a few metres away from where he was found, the reports said.

The body was later retrieved by police and deposited at the JNIMS morgue.

Alleging foul play in the death, enraged locals of the deceased today blocked the NH-102 stretch of Singjamei protesting the incident.

In the meantime, a JAC formed against the alleged killing of Sagolsem Prasanta alias Abung’ was formed today.

Later the JAC convened a meeting wherein it resolved to pressure the government to bring to book the culprits involved in the killing by noon tomorrow failing which it further warned to launch intense form of agitations along with various civil bodies.

The JAC also informed that it would continue to restrict vehicular movement along the NH 102 and at the same time refrain from claiming the body, until the perpetrators involved are booked.

According to a family source Abung was last seen by locals around 8.30 last night at the Yumjao Lairembi Lai Haraoba ceremony.

At the same time, his family had last talked to him on his mobile phone around 10.30 pm, when he had said he was coming home soon, added the source.

The deceased is said to be a fourth semester student of Kamakhya Pemton College Hiyangthang and currently working as a part time helper at a car wash plant run by a local.

Meanwhile, the sporadic agitation of the locals disrupted normal traffic along the route causing inconvenience to the commuters. The road block continued along the route till the time of filing this report.
