IMPHAL, May 18: The Bharatiya Janata Party has condemned the state government for showing negligence in dealing with the assault on Tourangbam (o) Tarini Devi by police personnel during a torch rally at Uripok Sorbon Thingel on the night of May 8, 2016.

In a press statement, the party’s general secretary of media affairs said Tarini received multiple injuries and one of her hand was fractured due from the physical assault by the security personnel. Although she had identified the police personnel who attacked her no action has been taken up against him, the note added. Following the inaction of government on prosecuting the concerned personnel, she had resorted to a hunger strike at Sorbon Thingel but was arrested on the third day of the fasting and has been kept at JNIMS security ward since on charge of attempting suicide.

Although Tarini is now being forced feed at the hospital, the government is still neglecting the issue and resisted taking action against the police personnel involved. The BJP Manipur Pradesh strongly demands the dropping of FIR against Tarini and appropriate action against the police personnel, the press release stated.

Meanwhile, a joint action committee formed against the brutal assault on Tarini has imposed an indefinite bandh at Uripok. The bandh supporters blocked the Uripok stretch of Uripok-Kanchup bringing serious disruption to vehicular movement.
