IMPHAL, May 14: Amphetamine tablets of foreign origin marketed as ‘WY’ packed in a polythene bag and wrapped with adhesive tape and worth Rs 50,41,000 were seized yesterday after a joint sting operation conducted by Customs Division, Shillong Head Quarter and Imphal.
Officials said after receiving reports that a gang was engaged in trafficking of such intoxicating drug Customs Division Shillong HQ and Imphal conducted a sting operation and six persons were arrested. First of all, Bijit Das, 58, S/o Bimol Das of Assam, at present residing at Thangal Bazar, Khoyathong and Ajit Kumar Das, 43, S/o Rebati Das from Sibpur, of Cachar District of Assam was caught from around City Heart Hotel, MG Avenue at around 4 pm yesterday by the sleuths. From the tip off from these two persons, their accomplice Manoranjan Modak, 42, S/o Bangshidhar from Purbha, Salbari, Jalpaiguri, West Bengal was held up from Major Khul near Manipur Press Club on the same day.
Continuing the chase, the officials later caught Th Nemjalam Mate alias Lalam, 30, W/oTh Jamkhoson Mate of Zalenphai part 3, Mission Veng, Moreh of Chandel District; Vinod Prasad, 39, S/o (L) Lakhan Dev Prasad of Khalisapur, Baniapur, Sarna District of Bihar, and now living at Checkon Awang Leirak and Amar Kumar Das, 57, S/o (L) Kalipada Das of Madhamgram Kolkata and now residing at Soibam Leikai Merry Leirak. These three drug peddlers were caught from near City Police Station.
The source said that the seized items was packed in 25 sachets and each sachet are packed with 200 World is Yours (WY) tablets. The drugs were seized under section 21, 22, 23 & 29 of the Narcotics Drug and Psychotropic Substances Act 1985 as empowered vide S.D.822(E) Notification No 6/85 dated 14/11/85 issued under the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substance Act, 1985.
