IMPHAL, Jun 16: Congress Corporator Soram Sunil, elected from Ward No 9 and Meibon Phaomei, elected from Ward No 26 have been elected Mayor and Deputy Mayor of the Imphal Municipal Corporation (IMC).
Soram Sunil and Meibon Phaomei were sworn in as IMC Mayor and Deputy Mayor respectively by Imphal West DC Ningthoujam Geo-ffrey at the IMC conference hall this afternoon.
IMC has 27 seats for Corporators. Out of them, Congress won 12 seats, BJP 10 seats while Independent candidates grabbed five seats.
However, four elected Independent Corporators later joined Congress party taking the party’s total tally to 16.
As a result, Congress party had little difficulty in assuming power in IMC.
Executive Officer, IMC Ng Uttam Singh and Returning Officer/SDO, Lamphel Imphal West Bantee Singh Konthoujam were also pre- sent at the swearing in ceremony.
Earlier, it may be mentioned that first meeting of the newly elected IMC Corpor-ators and election of the Mayor and Deputy Mayor was held at the Court Room of the Deputy Commissioner, Imphal West at Lamphel.
