rustum___nambul-river-11-735x400IMP/CCpur Jul 2: Following torrential rainfall in many parts of the State since the past couple of days, Nambul River which drains the heart of Imphal city is now flowing at flood level and the spill over waters have flooded some areas of the city.
According to information received from Irrigation and Flood Control Department (IFCD), Nambul River is now flowing at 783.450 m while the water level of Nambol River has been rising dramatically.
Even though the water level of Thoubal River remains steady, water level of Imphal River has, somehow, receded a bit.
On the other hand, a day after torrential rain wreaked havoc in several parts of Churachandpur town, flood water continues to submerge several low lying areas along the river courses today as rain continues to lash the area throughout the day.
The downpour lost its intensity compared to yester- day’s cloudburst yet it submerged a vast areas of resi- dential areas which were once preserved as river banks. As human greed and encroachment squeezed the river courses to as tiny as 10 foot in some areas any excessive rainfall within the town or in its catchment area has routinely resulted in man-made flood in this hill town since the past several years.
At least a couple of dozen houses are still submerged along the Lanva rivulet since yesterday while the Lailam and Chiengkon rivulets do not cause as much hardship despite the two causing an extensive damage in yesterday’s cloudburst.
