IMPHAL, December 26: Troops of 2 Assam Rifles of 9 Sector Assam Rifles under the aegis of HQ IGAR (South) apprehended two individuals carrying a huge cache of illegal gold on December 25.

According to a release of IGAR (South), the gold bars weighing approximately 28 kgs worth `Rs. 7.11 crores were recovered from the battery cabinet of a truck.

The Mobile Check Post established by 2 AR intercepted a civil truck bearing registration number AS01-EC-1776 near Lilong in Thoubal district.

During the search of the vehicle, gold bars worth Rs 7.11 crores were found, one of the biggest gold seizures in recent times.

The gold bars were concealed inside the battery cabinet of the truck. The apprehendees were identified as Md Arif, 24 son of Md Tolen of Kaibung Makha Leikai and Sayed, 17 son of Zakir of the same locality, it claimed.

Gold is smuggled in various ways; however, this innovative method of smuggling has been encountered for the first time. This recovery would definitely put a huge dent on the prevalent smuggling racket in the State.

The apprehendees along with the recovered items were handed over to the Customs Department, Pallel, the release said.
