IMPHAL, February 11: A large eagle who survived a fatal injury on its left wing was handed over to People for Animals (PFA) Manipur yesterday.

A statement of PFA Manipur said the eagle known as Steppe Eagle, weighing about 5 kg was handed over by one Longjam Hiteswor of Jaganath Achouba Leirak, Heirangoithong and was treated by Dr Devkishore of Claws and Paws Vet Clinic at his clinic.

According to Hiteswor, that the eagle fell down from the sky in front of his car with its body tangled with threads.

The threads were that of big kites flung in the State during the windy season. The bird might have mistaken a kite to be a potential enemy or the thread might have come across its fly path.

Now the eagle is at the animal shelter of PFA Manipur at Thoubal for further treatment, the statement said.

On the other hand, a young dog which fell in a hole was rescued by volunteers of PFA yesterday. The poor animal fell in a pit dug out at the centre of a road divider at Sagolband Meino Leirak.

Passersby and locals tried to rescue the animal but failed as the hole was 2 feet square large but 5 feet deep. One L Somnath conveyed the information to PFA.

PFA rescue team rushed to the spot and pulled up the exhausted, wet and weak dog using tong and rope at around 8 pm yesterday. Passerby and locals also helped the rescue team. They even blocked the highway for some minutes and let executed the rescue mission.

The dog might have been in the pit for more than 24 hrs before locals notice it.

Appealing all to avoid activities which could bring distress to animals, PFA said kite flying is no better than entertainment as it is a dead trap for birds.

It requested the people to inform the organization about such incident through the mobile number 9862107063.

PFA also appealed to the concerned who are erecting solar lamps on the streets to cover up the excavated pits at the earliest to avoid such incident in future.
