Rain continues to wreak havoc in Imphal

IMPHAL, Apr 1: Rain continued to wreak havok in the twin capital districts of Imphal West and Imphal East and other places of Manipur throwing life out of gear for the third consecutive day today. Last Thursday’s rainfall crossed 100 mm within 24 hours which was the highest since 1954, according to officials.

A report said some 20 pari of standing crops have been submerged under flood water in Imphal West’s Lamshang. Hundreds of homes are flooded and thousands of people remain stranded in relief centres opened at local areas of the capital.

“Our flood-hit homes are still submerged under water. The Government needs to take immediate steps,” Kh Tondon Singh, a flood victim, said.

Ministers and local MLAs continued to tour flood-affected areas taking measures there. Several educational institutes and Government establishments have been flooded with some school and colleges declaring holiday.

Most parts of Porompat, Kongba and Bamon Leikai in Imphal East and Keishampat, Uripok, Singjamei, Sagolband, Kakwa, Canchipur and several other areas have been affected by flood. The Manipur Cabinet yesterday reviewed the flood-like situation in parts of Imphal city and other areas of the State and a flood control room with telephone numbers 2450195 and 2451550 was opened at Khoyathong here which will be kept operational 24X7.
